Happy Halloween
A compilation of some of the most asked questions I get pertaining to LS swapping an FSJ!
No two swaps are exactly the same and there is an infinite number of ways to go about it. I encourage everyone to check out the FSJ LS Swap group on Facebook for more knowledge and opinions!
Performance, reliability, parts availability, fuel economy, they come with an excellent fuel injection system, easy overdrive transmission options, along with a massive amount of aftermarket support to suit nearly any type of build.
The sky is the limit, but most people have a budget in mind. With that said the more resourceful you are, the cheaper it will be. Many people doing their own work opt to purchase a donor vehicle with their desired drivetrain, and come close to breaking even after parting out the rest of their donor vehicle!
If a donor vehicle isn't in the cards for whatever reason, you can expect to spend about $4000 on parts in addition to the cost of the drivetrain.
If you opt to have a shop do the work, expect to spend at least 10 Grand in parts and labor.
They are all good, and they are all dimensionally virtually the same.
If you are on a budget the 99 to 06' GEN 3 Truck and SUV engines are hard to beat. These include the 4.8, 5.3 and 6.0's. Most are Iron blocks with aluminum cylinder heads.
The car engines (LS1, LS2,LS3, LS6, etc) are also a fine option but often come with a premium price.
Once you start dabbling with the GEN 4 engines, many are equipped with cylinder deactivation, and other fuel saving features. There are ways to eliminate these features, which some consider to be more prone to failure given the additional moving parts.
We did the homework to save you time! Lots of people performing this swap have the ability to fabricate their own mounts, but that can take up an entire day in the shop. How much is your time worth to you? The LS is a tight fit in the FSJ Engine bay, but once its in the rest of the swap seems to fall into place! We took everything into consideration in regards to the LS mechanical fan perfectly fitting the AMC V8 Fan shroud, hood clearance, axle clearance, exhaust manifold options, and even added adjustability so you can use the stock Jeep crossmember (75 and newer FSJ's) with most GM transmission and transfer case combinations!
This is a little bit of a loaded question, and it will come down to opinion in most cases.
Most people swapping their FSJ's care more about enjoying their Jeep than selling it.
With that said, if you have any concerns about resale value, this swap is 100% reversible with no major modifications to the rest of the Jeep necessary!
